U1-02: Anti-Virus
-------------------------
1513 Anti-Virus Utilities Small Programs Disk
-------------------------
BootSafe 3.3 (BOOTSAF)
Hamilton, Mark
$0
protects all the master and partition boot sectors on your hard drive
and warns if any modification has taken place.
Early Warning 2.0 (EARLYWA)
Romulus Software
$23
reads and verifies your operating system. It is able to detect any changes or
corruption by doing a byte by byte verification in the following areas: The Boot
Sector including the Partition Table, COMMAND.COM, IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS for
MS-DOS or IBMBIO.COM and IBMDOS.COM for PC-DOS.
Michangelo Fiasco (MICHTIME)
Rosenberger, Rob
$0
is a timeline of events which spurred worldwide panic about the Michelangelo
virus, which turned out to be a non-event. This is very interesting and
informative reading.
MRepeat 3.0 (08-93 CD)
Datachip
$50
is a group of programs to automate and manage virus scanning using
McAfee's ViruScan program. It can be used on standalone or networked
PCs.
Myths
Rosenberger, Rob and Greenberg, Ross
$0
is an informative text file discussing the myths and misconceptions about
computer viruses. While users should find comfort in this article, it should
be required reading for any journalist contemplating writing a story about
viruses.
CrcDOS
Faith, R. E.
$0
will automatically verify that specified files (such as the system files on
your hard disk) have not changed.
DBack 1.1
Gans, Eric
$?
will back up the FAT and root directory of a hard disk on another disk and
restore it in case catastrophe strikes. Aside from protecting against natural
disasters, this can also be used to protect against Trojan Horses and Viruses.
FluShot Plus 1.83 (FSP)
Greenberg, Ross M. ASP
$19
is a form of protection from viral and trojan horse programs. It is table driven
and offers security protection as well. You can write and/or read protect entire
classes of programs. Additionally, you can automatically check programs when you
first invoke FSP to determine if they've changed since you last looked at them.
It will advise you when any program "goes TSR".
IntChain (INTCHAI)
Bushong, D.
$?
is a program which can help you locate Trojan Horse programs. It will also
give you an indication as to what various TSR programs are doing to your
interrupt tables and will help resolve conflicts that this class of programs
has.
Save-Track-0 (ST0)
Bushong, Dave
$0
saves track zero of your hard disk for later restoration. This was intended as
a protection against the "Columbus Day Virus" which activated on 10/12/89 and
writes to the partition table of the hard disk. `C' source code is included.
ShutOut 1.1
Goodhand Technologies
$35
is a 6K TSR that protects computers and networks from viruses. It
monitors any system calls to the floppy drives and allows access through
password protection.
Validate 1.1 (VALIDAT)
Gregor, John
$?
will check any file for alterations. It can be used in your AUTOEXEC to trap
unauthorized changes to crucial software. You can set a validation key to
make your checksum value unique to prevent someone from doctoring a file's
checksum to avoid detection.
Vir-Doc
Goodwin, Jim
$0
is a catalog of IBM viruses and symptoms.
VTAC 5.0
Beck, Randolph
$5/user
is a 5k TSR that helps prevent viruses by not allowing alteration of programs or
system files, system-level disk alterations, or formatting of hard disks. The
program sends a warning message when such activity is detected. VTAC can be
easily deactivated when necessary.

END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #1513
--------------------------------
Checkup
Levin, Richard B.
$0-$25
#2445
detects potential viral infections of files by first comparing a target file's
size and then comparing it's checksum on an incremental basis.
FiCheck
Gilmore Systems
$15
#1466
is an anti-virus program that logs the date, time, size, attribute and CRC of
every file on your fixed disk(s). The authors are no longer at the address
listed in the documentation.
F-Prot 2.09
Frisk Software International
$20
#3675 (10-93 CD)
scans disks, hard drives, and all network drives for viruses using one of 3
methods: a secure scan which is slow, but makes an accurate identification;
full scan which is a little faster, or a quick scan that only searches for
known variants.
It detects 250 families of viruses. It scans diskettes or your entire system,
and allows the addition of a user-defined hexadecimal search pattern with
wildcards. It performs an analysis of the memory allocation, programs, and boot
sectors. It reports a list of infected files, disinfects files, and renames the
infected files so they may not be executed.
Integrity Master 2.01b [I_M151]
Stiller, Wolfgang ASP
$40
#3951 (10-93 CD)
is an anti-virus and data integrity system. The author says it detects all
known viruses. It can detect any form of file corruption, including disk
errors or as-yet unknown viruses. Stacker, DoubleSpace, SuperStore and
Bernoulli system files are supported.
McAfee Anti-Virus 9.16v105 [MCAFEE]
McAfee, John
$15-$35/module
#27397/2560 [3 disks] (09-93 CD)
contains the following set of powerful anti-virus utilities that can check for
over 500 different viruses:
CleanUp Virus Remover (CLEANUP) kills and removes computer viruses, and in
most instances it repairs infected files, re-constructs damaged programs and
returns the system to normal operation. Clean-Up works for all viruses
identified by the current version of McAfee Associates' Scan.
File Shield (FSHIELD) is intended for software distributors; it shields
executable files so that virus infections are instantly detected and
automatically removed by the shield. This protects the software manufacturer
against possible legal or liability questions when the software is introduced
into an already infected site. The Shield adds about 2k to an executable file.
NetScan is the network version of ViruScan. It scans network virtual drives
and identifies any pre-existing PC virus infection in the file servers. It
will indicate the specific files or system areas that are infected and will
identify the virus strain which has caused the infection. Removal can then be
done manually or, if the infection is widespread, automatic removal utilities
are available which can disinfect each virus strain.
Sentry monitors all system areas that are susceptible to viral attacks.
VCopy is a replacement program for the DOS copy command that checks for
viruses as it copies. It prevents infected programs from entering your system
and it identifies infected diskettes during the copy process. VCOPY copy will
detect all of the viruses detected by the current version of VIRUSCAN. It will
also scan inside programs that have been compressed with LZEXE.
ViruScan (VIRUSCN) scans diskettes or entire systems and identifies any
pre-existing PC virus infection. It will indicate the specific files or system
areas that are infected and will identify the virus strain which has caused
the infection. It can identify hundreds of major virus strains and numerous
sub-varieties for each strain. Another major feature allows SCAN to check
inside of programs compressed with LZEXE. An option to transparently attach a
CRC validation code to all of your executable files, your boot sector and your
partition table helps protect your system in case a virus unknown to SCAN is
encountered. You can save to disk a list of any files found infected. It
includes an option that allows you to scan for new viruses by adding your own
set of search strings loaded from an external virus data file.
VShield (fomerly SCANRES) is the memory resident version of ViruScan. This 17k
TSR checks for viruses in each program as it is being loaded into memory to
run, a process which adds about eight seconds to the loading and running of
the average program (or so say
